The Waste & Recycling Sector & Simpler Recycling
The UK government’s Simpler Recycling legislation, set to come into effect on 31 March 2025, aims to standardise waste segregation practices across households and businesses in England. This initiative is part of the UK government’s broader environmental strategy, outlined in the Environment Act 2021. These reforms align with the objective to achieve a 65% municipal waste recycling rate by 2035.
Key Requirements
Who is Affected
-
- All businesses, schools, hospitals, and other non-household municipal premises with more than 10 employees must comply by 31 March 2025.
- Micro businesses (fewer than 10 employees) will need to comply by 31 March 2027
Material Segregation
Businesses must separate the following recyclable materials from general waste for collection:
-
- Plastic
- Glass
- Metal (e.g., cans, tins, and foil)
- Paper and cardboard
- Food waste
Additionally, from 31 March 2027, businesses will be required to segregate plastic film as part of the plastic waste stream.
Compliance Details
Segregation at Source: Recyclable materials must be sorted where waste is generated. This reduces contamination and ensures higher-quality recycling streams.
Flexibility in Collections: Waste collectors can offer co-collection options (e.g., combining paper and cardboard with other dry recyclables) if it is economically, operationally, and environmentally viable.
Exclusions: Garden waste is not included for non-household premises.
